SPHERE of INFLUENCE is a bilingual rapper who uses his experience in New York as a weapon. He has performed with CRYSTAL KAY, M-FLO, Al, MAYJ, JAMOSA, Thelma Aoyama, ZEEBRA, Sarina Suzuki (Munehiro), JESSE (RIZE), URATA NAOYA (AAA), and countless others. In 2009, he released a major single, "Kimi to itai feat Denda Mao," which ranked No. 1 on the Oricon Chaku-Uta Full Weekly Ranking. In 2023, the EP "leMUria IN AScEnsion" made it to the top 30 of the Hiphop/Rap Chart on iTunes.
After more than two decades away from solo album releases, SPHERE of INFLUENCE returns with “SPHiNX: Rise of Mu,” a project that reconnects with his hip-hop roots while revealing an artist whose musical perspective has continued to evolve. Following his sensational 2002 debut, “THE INFLUENCE,” on Def Jam Japan, and his influential role in shaping the Japanese rap and R&B scene throughout the 2000s, this new release marks a significant chapter in his career.
Built around sounds inspired by 1990s hip-hop, the album explores a diverse range of musical territories. Tough, jazz-inflected productions sit alongside relaxed lo-fi beats, while funk and R&B influences introduce additional colour to its overall sound. Rather than restricting itself to one particular style, “SPHiNX: Rise of Mu” embraces variety, creating a listening experience that reflects both its nostalgic foundations and contemporary sensibilities.
The album also benefits from an impressive lineup of guest appearances, bringing together L-VOKAL, WISE of TERIYAKI BOYZ, ISH-ONE, Shen of E.D.O., DENDA MAO and JAMOSA. These collaborations add different voices and perspectives to the project, reinforcing its collaborative spirit without losing focus on SPHERE's return.
Behind the music, the production team includes DJ Tonk, DJ Sachiho, Marcus D and GENJU, also known as DiRTY XL DiGGA. Their contributions help establish the album's varied sonic identity, moving between jazz-influenced hip-hop, understated atmospheres and genre-crossing arrangements.
Despite its long-awaited comeback status, “SPHiNX: Rise of Mu” does not rely exclusively on past achievements. Its peaceful character and stylistic diversity suggest an artist interested in expressing a more mature musical outlook.
Ultimately, this release offers a welcome return from an important figure in Japanese hip-hop, celebrating his legacy while confidently exploring new creative possibilities.
