Rock/Review DownTown Mystic - Somebody's Always Doin' Something 2 Somebody

DownTown Mystic is the alter ego of American rocker Robert Allen, whose passion for “old school” recording borders on obsession. Robert is joined by a stellar cast of musicians, including drummer extraordinaire Steve Holley (Paul McCartney/Wings/Elton John/Ian Hunter) & Paul Page (Dion/Ian Hunter) on bass, as well as one of the great rhythm sections in the history of American rock and roll—Max Weinberg & Garry Tallent of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.

DownTown Mystic continues to carry the torch for timeless American rock ’n’ roll with the release of the single “Somebody's Always Doin' Something 2 Somebody” and the accompanying “Mystic Highway” EP — a six-track collection that showcases the project’s signature blend of roots, grit, and impeccable musicianship. As always, writer-producer Robert Allen curates a lineup of standout players, staying true to his long-held philosophy: surround yourself with musicians so good they elevate every note. On “Mystic Highway,” that philosophy pays off magnificently.

The single itself bursts with vintage attitude and modern clarity. Featuring Jeff Levine on Moog, piano, and organ, “Somebody's Always Doin' Something 2 Somebody” grooves with rolling keys, sharp guitar lines, and a melody that nods to classic roots rock while carrying a fresh, contemporary edge. The new AI-assisted video — the first created for DownTown Mystic by Richard Levinsohn of the Rick Lee Vinson Group — adds a unique visual twist that complements the track’s tongue-in-cheek title and restless energy.

Across the EP, the rhythm section of drummer Steve Holley and bassist Paul Page lays down a rock-solid foundation, giving each track that unmistakable DownTown Mystic punch. Meanwhile, guitarists Lance Doss, Bruce Engler, and Justin “JJ” Jordan deliver the crisp riffs and tasteful leads that define the project’s sound — straight-ahead, unpretentious, and driven by feel.

“Mystic Highway” is more than a collection of songs; it’s a statement of commitment to authentic rock craftsmanship in an era of shortcuts. DownTown Mystic doesn’t just honor rock tradition — it keeps it alive, vibrant, and road-ready.
