Rock/Review Koalra - Disasterclass

Fusing the fuzz-fueled guitars and loose rhythms of acts like Dinosaur Jr. To the experimental soundscapes of artists such as Sonic Youth and The Cure, Koalra is an emerging indie rock band who recently moved to Portland from their native Chicago. The 90's-influenced four-piece released their self-titled album in December of 2019. The eight-track debut is a noise-fest of uplifting yet thrashing guitar tracks full of grungy melodies.

“Disasterclass” is one of the songs from Koalra’s soon-to-be released album of the same title. Koalra grows up with this release bringing in a darker and heavier style that gives the overall music a bit more depth into another dimension.

The soft and echo-based opening lush guitars in “Disasterclass” title track perfectly fit in and immediately create a mood. There are guitars in the song which creates a wide and emotional sonic environment of the musical journey to come. The track pulses in time with this rhythm and carries its own momentum, compelling the audience towards it.

“Disasterclass” stands out for bringing together different pieces that make up Koalra’s original sound. The band’s way through the song is characterized by varying amplitude providing for both explosive and softer/atmospheric parts. It offers this musical encounter that one experiences which is engaging and evocative.

The lyrics of the song highlights Koalra’s ability to construct complex and multi-faceted musical compositions. Each component of that interplay contributes perfectly towards the total texture and ambience of that song. This leads to a sonic weave that engages and ensnares the audience in the encompassing dimension of the music of Koalra.

“Disasterclass” is a single and also is the track title off the next band album by Koalra which sets up the bigger storyline for them. This release bears evidence of the band’s talent to transform their sound but still keeping it unique and distinctive. “Disasterclass” presents a preview of what fans of Koalra expect and also gives some insights into how the band had grown for newcomers. The album will be released on December 22nd and it’ll provide users with an adventurous listening journey.
