R&B/Review Konyikeh - Cinere

Konyikeh is an artist doing things on her own terms. A beguiling singer-songwriter, she makes soulful, cinematic music with striking lyrics, sung with a truly astonishing voice. As a kid, Konyikeh was listening to musical theatre, Jennifer Hudson’s Pocketbook, her mum’s Destiny’s Child CDs, opera, and the Kenyan Boys Choir. Throughout her childhood she would play the violin and piano and perform in the orchestra and chamber choir, alongside learning music theory.

“Cinere” by Konyikeh is a striking and deeply personal EP that captures an artist in the midst of transformation. Rooted in the idea of rebirth—reflected in its title, derived from ex cinere (“from the ashes”)—the project feels like both a reckoning and a renewal, where vulnerability becomes a source of strength rather than exposure.

From the outset, “Cinere” resists easy categorization. It moves fluidly between styles, blending contemporary production with classical sensibilities in a way that feels organic rather than experimental for its own sake.
