R&B/Review Sheena-Rae - so low luv

Sheena-Rae is a solo vocalist and songwriter based in London. She crafted her debut EP in 2021 during the lockdown, establishing her sound in the pop, rap, and R&B genres. Sheena gained recognition after appearing on ITV’s singing and dating show, Romeo and Juliet, hosted by Oti Mabuse. In addition to her music, she also models, dances, and acts. She spent some time in Cyprus as a live solo singer, performing covers from the eighties to today’s chart-toppers.

With vulnerability at the core of its music, Sheena-Rae's “so low luv” is a remarkable album that skillfully blends pop, R&B, and rap with an honesty that strikes a deep chord. Sheena-Rae incorporates her personal experiences—heartbreak, unrequited love, and emotional resilience—into a collection of songs that feel intimate yet universally relevant, drawing inspiration from musicians such as Kehlani and Tinashe.

The album's unadulterated sincerity is what makes it so captivating. Since Sheena-Rae did almost all of the vocal work herself and the album was mostly recorded in her home studio, the music was able to maintain a very intimate feel. Without sacrificing the intimacy of the songwriting that was born in the bedroom, the distant production, mixing, and mastering offer a professional finish. “so low luv” feels sophisticated yet grounded thanks to this harmony between professional shine and do-it-yourself authenticity.

While some tracks, like the song, "i do me," lean into confident rhymes that showcase her rap influences, others use eerie melodies and smokey vocals to portray the pain of heartbreak. She is able to combine well-known R&B clichés with a novel viewpoint because of her British Indian ancestry, which adds another delicate layer of cultural texture.

The album's theme is an examination of the intricacies of love, including its peaks and valleys as well as the process of drawing strength from weakness. Every song builds on the one before it, creating a storyline that reflects the phases of emotional recovery.

In the end, “so low luv” positions Sheena-Rae as a new artist with lyrical honesty and stylistic diversity. It's a debut that encourages listeners to feel and to heal—a record that feels intimate, well-produced, and strong.
