Rock/Review ReeToxA - Soliloquy
ReeToxA originally emerged as the brainchild of Melbourne’s own Jason McKee, a lifelong songwriter whose musical awakening took place as a teenager against the gritty backdrop of 1990s Frankston, although life quickly got in the way of his creative dreams. Years later, affected by the death of his mother during a prison stint, Jason once again found himself seeking catharsis, penning the song Bobbie in her honor, and committing himself to recording a debut album after his release.
“Soliloquy” by ReeToxA is an ambitious, sprawling double album that aims to capture the full spectrum of human emotion—and, for the most part, succeeds in doing so with striking intensity. Years in the making, and born out of reflection during the global pandemic, the record feels deeply personal yet expansively cinematic, as if one individual’s story has been elevated to something almost mythic.
At the heart of “Soliloquy” is its sense of scale. The inclusion of a European orchestra gives the album a grand, symphonic weight, elevating the compositions far beyond standard indie frameworks. Sweeping strings, dramatic crescendos, and carefully layered arrangements create a listening experience that demands attention and immersion. This is not background music—it’s a journey best experienced in full, preferably with headphones, as intended.
What makes the album particularly compelling is its emotional breadth. ReeToxA moves through themes of isolation, ambition, regret, and redemption with an unfiltered honesty that feels both raw and deliberate. There’s a sense that every track is part of a larger narrative arc, reflecting years of lived experience and creative evolution. The writing never feels rushed; instead, it carries the weight of time, obsession, and persistence.
Despite its grandiosity, “Soliloquy” doesn’t lose its human core. Beneath the orchestral flourishes and conceptual scope lies a deeply introspective voice, one that invites listeners to reflect on their own journeys.
Ultimately, “Soliloquy” is a bold and immersive statement—an album that reaches high and, in doing so, leaves a lasting emotional imprint long after the final note fades.
